Book Mejor Dejarlo Tranquilo

A book by Rimke van der Geest about psychosis and poverty in Nicaragua, based on an antropological study.

Mejor dejarlo tranquilo

This book is based on anthropological research and assistance in the Nicaraguan city of Matagalpa. During a period of five years, the author visited families with one or more members suffering from a psychotic disorder. The touching stories of four of those families, are recorded in this book. They are about poverty, violence and the futile quest for a cure.
The title ‘Its best to leave them alone’, relates to the survival strategy the families use out of necessity to make it through the day as best as possible, after years of struggle.
Apart from the families, social workers and people from the neighbourhood also tell their stories. This way the reader gets an idea of the assistance for psychotic patients that is available in Matagalpa and how society thinks about them. At the ending the author describes how she and family members have set up a self-help organization to cope with psychoses and the problems related to it.

The author has meant for students, social workers and policymakers to gain insight from this book on the problems on psychosis in Nicaragua. It is also a plea for psychiatric homecare and involving family members in the treatment of psychotic patients.
